Abyssinian Red Banana

Go tropical on your patio or garden borders with a stunning red banana. This banana is a cultivar of the 'False banana' or Abyssinian banana. It is grown as a crop in Ethiopia and its starchy stems make up the staple diet of huge numbers of people.

You are buying a plant at least 50cms tall including the pot. We cannot give an exact height as they can grow quite rapidly. This plant needs a rich soil and appreciates being planted in a sunny spot, although it will tolerate part shade during the day. A sheltered area is preferable as this helps to prevent wind damage to the leaves. Bananas are hungry feeders so during the growing season, watering thoroughly and feeding regularly will help to produce a superb specimen. Under the right growing conditions this banana can grow very large. If they grow too big simply cut the main trunk to the required height and new shoots should emerge from the stem. The lower leaves fade and die. This is normal. They can be cut off to maintain a tidy plant. This banana is not hardy and so should be protected from frosts in the winter.
