You are buying Kew Red French Lavender plug plants.

These are large plug plants approximately 30mm x 40mm. These plants have been in winter dormancy, but will grow away very quickly once planted in new soil.

This is a very compact, short stemmed, evergreen shrub with narrow green leaves. The plump flowers with their distinctive pink 'butterfly' bracts are an attractive crimson red. This is a very free flowering variety, and forms clumps of about 40cms in height making it perfect for containers or borders, or sunny Mediterranean style gardens. It's drought tolerance makes it suitable for coastal planting if grown in a sheltered spot. 'Kew Red' is named after the Kew-Redding expedition to Spain to obtain this much sought after variety.

French Lavender is an old variety cultivated for many hundreds of years, both for its distinctive 'butterfly' or 'bunny ear' bracts, and its intense fragrance. It is not fully hardy and is best grown in a sunny position that is sheltered from cold winds and frosts. Alternatively it can be container grown and brought indoors over winter.

All lavenders must have well drained soil as they are very drought tolerant and do not like to be kept too wet. They prefer full sun, although they will grow well in part or full shade. They prefer soil that is not over rich. Their flowers are often dried and used for pot puree or dried flower arrangements amongst many other uses. They are great for attracting butterflies and bees and for use in the scented garden. Lavenders benefit greatly if cut back in early spring or after flowering, this helps to prevent dead wood from forming, making a neat and tidy bush.

We also have other varieties as well as mixed lavender packs available on our site.

Please note that the actual plant colours may vary slightly from the image shown.
