Musella Lasiocarpa.
Chinese dwarf banana
Musella Lasiocarpa.
Go tropical on your patio or garden borders with a true 'cold tolerant' banana! This cousin of the banana originates from the mountainous Yunnan province in China and is also known as the 'Golden Lotus banana' because of the spectacular lotus-like flower that is sometimes produced and lasts many months. If yours does flower, you will find that afterwards the main plant will die. However, by then you should have many more smaller plants or suckers, growing from the base of the main stem, which you can use to replace the original plant.
You are buying a plant at least 60cms tall including the pot. This Banana needs a rich soil and appreciates being planted in a sunny spot, although it will tolerate part shade during the day. A sheltered area is preferable as this helps to prevent wind damage to the leaves. Bananas are hungry feeders so during the growing season, watering thoroughly and feeding regularly will help to produce a superb specimen. Under the right growing conditions this Banana can grow to about 6 feet in the UK. This banana is purported to be hardy down to around -9 degrees centigrade. However we would recommend that protection is still given from frosts in the winter.
